Netflix prices could rise after Hollywood strike

Netflix announces a new price increase in France

The streamer now has 247 million subscribers worldwide.

Netflix is doing well. A turnover of 8.542 billion dollars – up 7.8% – during the third quarter of 2023, and operational revenues amounting to 1.9 billion dollars. The world leader in streaming can rejoice, especially as it continues to attract new subscribers.

Certainly due to the effects of actions taken to limit account sharing, the network announces 247.15 million subscribers worldwide as of September 30, 2023, or 8.8 million more customers than in the previous quarter.

However, Netflix will increase the price of its subscriptions. Increases which concern three territories for the moment: the United States, the United Kingdom and France. In detail, the cost of the monthly subscription for the essential offer (a single screen in HD) increases from €8.99 to €10.99. At the other end of the scale, the premium offer (4 simultaneous screens up to 4K HDR) goes from €17.99 to €19.99 per month. On the other hand, the standard subscription (2 screens) that most households have does not change and remains at the price of €13.49 per month. The same goes for the offer with advertising, which remains at €5.99.

Netflix does not really explain these increases, but in the speech, we understand that the strike which has paralyzed Hollywood in recent months and the new agreements signed with the unions (of the screenwriters, pending a deal with that of the actors) are already having repercussions on consumers. “The last six months have been difficult for our industry.”, declares the platform. “We are committed to resolving the remaining issues as quickly as possible so that everyone can get back to work producing films and TV shows that audiences will love.”
