Robert Downey Jr. regrets that Margot Robbie didn’t get more credit for Barbie
“Margot Robbie doesn’t get enough recognition, in my opinion,” says the Oppenheimer actor.
Robert Downey Jr., Sterling K.Brown And William Dafoe the three came together in a conversation hosted by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. The three actors talked about their profession for an hour and Robert Downey Jr.. took the opportunity to support Margot Robbie after his non-nomination for the Oscars for barbie.
Indeed, during the revelations, Ryan Gosling And America Ferrera were both nominated for Best Supporting Actors, but were surprised and disappointed to find that neither Margot Robbieneither Greta Gerwig had not been selected for best actress and best direction. Both stars publicly showed their support by criticizing their colleagues’ Oscar snobbery.
This time, it’s the turn of Robert Downey Jr.. to make a contribution: “Margot Robbie doesn’t get enough recognition, in my opiniondeclares the actorOppenheimer. America (Ferrera) has this incredible speech. And she hits the nail on the head, by the way! I look at him and say to myself: ‘Wow, that was really difficult. It’s like a one-act play. The whole movie depends on it.’”
Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie snubbed at the Oscars: “There is no Ken without Barbie”, annoys Ryan Gosling
But despite this performance which he salutes, he recognizes that the real grace comes from the silence of Barbie, embodied by Margot Robbie : “There are all these shots of Robbie listening so actively and I realize that Greta is really onto something here. But it was Robbie who had to be trusted… and it’s hard when someone who has this fucking two page passage says: ‘Okay, now let’s go find Bob,’ and you say: ‘I’ve been listening to this all day and now I have to make it work!’” he concludes.
Far from prioritizing performances between the different actors of barbie, Robert Downey Jr. rather puts the finger on a way of playing that we perhaps forget too often. The moments where the actors are restrained and don’t say a single word are worth as much as those where they have a perfectly executed five-minute tirade.
“It never fails to impress and remind me how little one has to do to be effective. That’s just the simplest version of the phrase, that’s what the camera wants. The closer the camera gets, the more it wants. Time and time again it has been shown to be super effective”, declares Robert Downey Jr.
