Here are the 10 French films that performed best worldwide in 2023
Miraculous is the French film which had the most admissions abroad last year, ahead of Asterix or d’Artagnan.
If the year 2023 was good, overall, for French cinemas, it was also good for French films abroad. 37.4 million spectators went to see works from France, in international theaters, for a cumulative revenue of 234 million euros. This represents a magnificent rebound of 39% after the COVID years, but Unifrance, which publishes these figures this week, emphasizes that the scores have not yet returned to the level before the health crisis (45.9 million spectators in 2019).
It was animated cinema that took French production beyond its borders last year, totaling 30% of admissions. Starting with number 1 in the ranking: Miraculous !
Helped by the cartoon which is a hit on TV in the four corners of the planet, Jérémie Zag’s film attracted 7.15 million curious people to cinemas abroad, for 31.8 million euros in revenue. ! All this while Miraculous was released directly on Netflix in North America and Oceania and many countries in Asia.
It is still significantly more thanAsterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, which follows with 2.74 million entries. The most seen film of the year in France is number 2 in the rest of the world and collects 18.2 million outside France.
Pattie and the Wrath of Poseidon made an astonishing third. The animated film, which did very well in Russia, the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as in Oceania and South Korea, ended with 1.76 million curious foreigners.
Jeanne du Barry And The Three Musketeers – D’Artagnan complete the top 5 with around 1.7 million tickets sold outside France.
Follows Anatomy of a fall, still in production and which is riding on its success at the Golden Globes (and soon at the Oscars) to get a big release in the USA (in 600 theaters). Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or has already attracted 1.55 million visitors.
Behind, we find A great race (with Line Renaud and Dany Boon) then My Crime by François Ozon, before Dogman by Luc Besson and Jungle Aces 2which completes the top 10.
It should be noted that Russia, despite the war, remains the main territory where French films do best. They had a total of 7 million entries last year. Germany (4.2 million), Poland (3.2 million), Italy (2.2 million) and Spain (1.8 million) are in the top 5.
And the United States? North America (USA + Canada) only accounts for 5.1% of foreign entries (1.90 million) in 2023.
