Scarlet and Eternity: the epic trailer for the new Mamoru Hosoda

The director of Miraï, my little sister and Belle is back with a new tale inspired by Hamlet.

Mamoru Hosoda has established himself as one of the masters of Japanese animation, notably thanks to the success of Miraï, my little sistera gem of the genre presented at Cannes in 2018 and nominated for an Oscar. A great talent on our radars since Summer Wars (2009), and who dazzled us again with his last feature film, Beautifulalso noticed on the Croisette. A prodigious rereading of the famous myth popularized by Disney.

His new filmScarlet and Eternitydid not pass through Cannes but through Venice. We are no less impatient to discover this production from Studio Chizu, co-founded in 2011 by Mamoru Hosoda and Yuichiro Saito. A new fantastic tale, but this time far from social networks, with a scenario clearly inspired by Hamlet.

With each film, I am able to address new spectators, which opens up new horizons for me.“, explained the filmmaker at the Mostra (via Variety). “The fact that I can integrate these almost Shakespearean elements into animation is something I would never have imagined 20 years ago.

Synopsis: Scarlet, a medieval princess expert in sword fighting, embarks on a perilous quest to avenge the death of her father. Her plan fails and, seriously injured, she finds herself thrown into another world, the Land of the Dead. She will cross paths with an idealistic young man of our time, who not only helps her heal but also lets her see that a world without resentment or anger is possible. Faced with her father’s murderer, Scarlet will then have to fight her greatest fight: breaking the cycle of hatred and giving meaning to her life by overcoming her desire for revenge.

Scarlet and Eternity will be released on March 11, 2026 in France and will immerse us in a typically Japanese feudal universe. Combining hand drawing and digital, the animation required four and a half years of work (compared to three years for the previous Hosada), and the result is impressive. Trailer:
