Sharon Stone tells of his tensions with Michael Douglas before Basic Instinct
“I fell my chair and said to him: ‘Come, we go out, we’re going to be explained outside!’ This is how we met. ”
The tension was palpable on the screen, between Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas, in the unforgettable Basic Instinct by Paul Verhoeven (1992). And it’s no coincidence …
In an interview with Business Insider, Sharon Stone returns to his explosive beginnings with Michael Douglas, when sharing the poster of the erotic thriller.
Even before filming Basic Instinctthe already star actor did not want to hear about her.
“Michael Douglas did not want to show his buttocks on the screen with a stranger. And I understood that. He even refused to test with me. But it was also for another reason: we had argued for a while.”
The argument in question took place in Cannes, when a small group of friends discussed. Douglas evoked the story of a father he knew, and his children. But Sharon Stone knew this family very well : “So I said something, and he replied: ‘What do you know, you, mess? It was about a father-child relationship. Clearly, it woke up something in him. He shouted it to me in front of everyone.”
Stone’s response was not long in coming: “I am not the type to say ‘oh sorry, Mr. Star’. I fell my chair and I said to him: ‘Come, we go out, we will be explained outside!’ This is how we met. “
Outside, she calmly explains to him what she knew about this family. “I was very friendly with the children and the parent he was talking about. Then we left, not like the best friends, but in a cordial way.”
Some time later, the time comes to the casting of Basic Instinct. And according to her, Michael Douglas still had their altercation in mind:
“I think he didn’t want me to be his partner.”
But ultimately, this tension nourished their dynamics on the screen : “It worked very well, because I did not lose my means when he shouted on it. It was interesting for the character, because Michael has temperament, and I didn’t care.”
An electric alchemy that contributed to the success of the film … and to a beautiful friendship: “We have finally become very close, even today. I admire it a lot.”
