In development since 2020, the project is in the freezer, confided the director while promoting his new film, Klara and the Sun.

After having tasted the Star Wars universe on the series The Mandalorianof which he had directed an episode in addition to dubbing a robot, Taika Waititi was entrusted with the direction of a film in the saga.

The announcement dates back to Star Wars Day 2020 and over the years the filmmaker has made numerous declarations, ensuring that he would remain faithful to his style, even if it meant driving fans crazy. Last January, he explained again that he wanted to bring back the fun present, according to him, in the original trilogy.

The project was still officially in development, but seemed to be making little progress as Lucas Film prioritized the films The Mandalorian and Grogureleased in May, and Star Wars: Starfighterscheduled for next year with Ryan Gosling in the lead role.

In promotion for his new feature film, Klara and the sunworn by Jenna Ortega, Waititi today recognizes that his Star Wars is at a standstill. Asked by Reversehe declares:

“I’m sorry to break it to you, but we’re going to have to put this on ice and work on something else.”

Relaunched by the journalist, he turns to his publicist to find out if he can say more: “If you have to ask the question, the answer is no..” “Well you have your answer“, Waititi continues, while leaving a small door open.

“I don’t know how to turn this around, even if it remains vague. It’s very frozen. I have four films I’m trying to make. But an ice age eventually ends. So who knows?”
