The Boys, season 5: why Homelander killed…
After episode 5, some explanations are necessary.
It was a brutal murder at the end of episode 5 of season 5 of The Boys that shocked fans. And that deserved a little explanation.
Spoiler alert!
In this episode, Firecracker is suddenly killed after a confrontation with Homelander. The character, played by Valorie Curry, had just contested his ouster from the Seven. What begins as an attempt at justification quickly degenerates into a tense exchange that turns the scene upside down: Homelander plants the young woman’s head on a statue and savagely kills her. The actress confides that she herself took time to understand this moment:
“I wasn’t entirely sure why he was acting so impulsively…”
She explains that the meaning of the scene gradually revealed itself during filming, describing Firecracker as a character who was already deeply broken:
“She had nothing left, no more filter, the mask had completely fallen off!”
For her, the difference comes down to Firecracker’s behavior in the face of the all-powerful God of the Seven: unlike the others, she dares to confront Homelander head-on and still thinks she can get away with it. She summarizes this attitude as follows:
“She’s trying. She’s daring to go all-in, and she thinks she can still fix things because she’s already sold her soul to him…”
This is precisely what sends Homelander over the edge. Still according to Curry, Firecracker is “winning” the confrontation, and that’s what makes the situation unbearable for him:
“It was too uncomfortable, too revealing of his humanity.”
A form of vulnerability that he refuses to accept, and which triggers his action. The actress finally insists on the totally impulsive nature of the murder, not at all calculated. A hot reaction, faithful to the unstable psychology of the two characters. Further proof that The Boys can kill everyone at any time.
Season 5 continues on Prime Video.
