The Handmaid’s Tale: the explosive episode 9 of the final season explained
The penultimate episode of the series will mark the fans for a long time …
Boom. Literally. The penultimate episode of The Handmaid’s Tale To explode everything – literally and figuratively. In this mastered carnage, two major figures in the series derive their reverence in an ice finish.
Attention spoilers!
Serena (interpreted by Yvonne Strahovski) finally chose his camp. She abandoned her initial gilead rehabilitation plan to swing everything June (Elisabeth Moss) and its American allies. This Capital reversal sets up a high -risk suicide operation: blowing up the commanders! June convinces Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) to embark a bomb aboard the device. Objective: behead Gilead’s hierarchy. Among the passengers we find the commander Wharton (Josh Charles), Serena’s husband, but also Nick (Max Minghella). The young man goes on board and explodes in flight with Lawrence, Wharton and the others. RIP.
From the start of season 6, the writers knew that Nick And Lawrence would have to fall. “This season had to force each character to reveal who he is really. What have the characters learned-or not learned-over the series? This is the central question of this season, and Nick as Lawrence do not escape it. We know that the fate of Nick divides: many fans are turned upside down by his death and we understand why. Fans, is not a ‘nice’ commander.
Going further in the explanation of the case of ordering Blaine, the showunners insist:
“”We never wanted to transform Nick into ‘super nice’ nor into ‘big villains’. For me, it has never been one or the other. I have a lot of empathy for him. He is a man who did beautiful things to save the woman he loved. I don’t see it as a monster. He was just caught up in enormous pressure, and at that moment against Wharton … I have compassion for him. “
But did Nick know what was waiting for him? If Lawrence voluntarily sacrificed her life to go to the end of the mission, Nick did not know that the plane was going to jump. However, he had as a second of hesitation, almost feeling the presence of June:
“I prefer to let everyone interpret the scene in their own way. We can clearly feel that Nick has a kind of sixth sense, that he feels that something does not turn round in what Lawrence tells him, that he suspects something. But does he really think that there is a bomb in the case placed next to him? It remains open to interpretation. I think that part of him was already dead … and continues to die. And you are right: it is the part of him linked to June who turns off. And that is a huge part of what it is. ”
And now ?
Episode 10, the ultimate chapter in the series, promises a whirlwind of emotions.
“This final, written by Bruce Miller and directed by Elisabeth Moss, is deeply faithful to the DNA of The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s powerful, organic, brutal and beautiful. Everything we hope for an end“Promise showrunners.
