The Marvels: box office predictions are very disappointing
Without actors to promote, the next Marvel film could have difficulty making its mark.
The Marvels will be released in 20 days in the United States, a priori still in the midst of an actors’ strike and a superhero tired which is slowly taking hold. Deprived of the promotion of its stars (including Brie Larson), the 33rd (!) Marvel Studios film could pay the price, if the box office forecasts for its opening weekend in the US are to be believed, reported by THR. NRG specialist companies predict revenues of 72 to 88 million and 80 to 90 million respectively. Very disappointing figures, Captain Marvel having grossed (in 2019) $153.4 million in its first weekend of operation.
THR specifies that 25 of Marvel’s films have exceeded $100 million on American soil over the same periods. The last feature film from the firm not to have exceeded 70 million was Ant-Manin 2015, with 57.2 million dollars.
It’s not yet time for panic for Marvel Studios, but if the total box office of The Marvels should have been a failure, the results of Deadpool 3 (potentially pushed back), Captain America: Brave New World And Thunderbolts will be closely scrutinized to see if audiences are truly starting to lose interest in Marvel superhero films, or if this is just a passing period.
The Marvels will be released on November 8 in France. Directed by Nia DaCosta (the reboot of Candyman), it will feature Carol Danvers facing the unforeseen consequences of her victory against the Krees. Unexpected effects now force him to assume the burden of a destabilized universe. During a mission that propels her into a strange vortex closely linked to the actions of a Kree revolutionary, her powers mix with those of Kamala Khan – aka Miss Marvel, her super-fan from Jersey City – and with those of his “niece”, Captain Monica Rambeau, now an astronaut within SABER Initially chaotic, this unlikely trio soon finds themselves forced to team up and learn to work together to save the universe.
