The release of the film Les Misérables is postponed by two months

This adaptation of the classic of French literature changes its release date.

Initially scheduled for December 9, 2026, the release of the film Les Miserables is postponed to mid-October. StudioCanalits distributor, is making a strategic change since the film will be available in cinemas during the height of the awards season, giving it great visibility. Perhaps also to avoid Dune 3 And Avengers: Doomsday which will arrive in French cinemas on December 16?

We knew the 1958 adaptation with Jean Gabin, Bourvil and even Bernard Blier… Nearly 70 years later, this monument of French literature resurfaces in the cinema.

The posthumous success of Victor Hugo, the very famous 19th century writer, no longer needs to be demonstrated… This historical novel with multiple intrigues which depicts the tragic destiny of Jean Valjean, Cosette and Fantine seduces even on the other side of the Atlantic. In 2012, a musical adaptation of the Miserablea highly acclaimed film, nominated 8 times for the Oscars and which earned Anne Hathaway the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Returning to his native country, Les Miserables directed by Fred Cavayé, will offer a contemporary rereading of the story initially published in 1862. The cast includes Vincent Lindon, in the title role of Jean Valjean, Tahar Rahim (Mr Aznavour), Camille Cottin (Ten percent), Benjamin Lavernhe (the next master of ceremonies of the Césars) and Noémie Merlant (Portrait of the girl on fire).

In 2019, it was the filmmaker Ladj Ly who presented a revisit of this Parisian epic, with his film also titled Les MiserablesJury Prize in Cannes. More recently, the character of Jean Valjean was featured in the eponymous film by Eric Besnard with Grégory Gadebois, Bernard Campan and Alexandra Lamy.

We therefore expect a lot from the director of Point Blank with this very ambitious new adaptation.

Les Miserables will be released on October 14, 2026 in French theaters.

Synopsis: Jean Valjean, a former convict who escaped from the penal colony where he spent 16 years for stealing bread, now devotes himself to doing good around him. He creates a new identity for himself, that of a respected notable, and comes to the aid of Fantine, a dying worker, by promising to save her daughter, little Cosette, from the clutches of the Thénardiers, the innkeepers who exploit and mistreat her. While Valjean takes care of the child and raises her like his own daughter, his past ends up catching up with him in the person of Inspector Javert who has never stopped chasing him all these years. Despite the social unrest shaking France, the destinies of Valjean, Cosette, her lover Marius and Javert intertwine in a bustling and revolutionary Paris. Through struggle, sacrifice, and a deep desire for justice, Valjean strives to complete his journey of redemption and offer Cosette a future of love and freedom.
