The Simpsons are already preparing the 800th episode of the series!
A striking step in the history of the cartoon, scheduled for February 2026.
They still live in Springfield. Homer still works at the nuclear power plant. Bart and Lisa always go to elementary school. The Simpsons are engraved in marble and season 37 has just started (in France on Disney Plus).
The co-showrunner Matt Selman returns to this incredible longevity in Entertainement Weekly and explains how the series tries to renew itself despite the passing time:
“The Simpsons have existed for so long. We are approaching the 800th episode! The challenge is to tell stories that give the impression of coming from a series that is not in its 37th season. And above all, to avoid repeating or producing episodes without personality, which have nothing to say. A way of doing that, is to go more deeply in the city: the absurd, endearing inhabitants. First episode of season 37 rests its main plot on the Lisa-Marge relationship.
But what the series will not do to stay in tune with the times is about political! Matt Selman assures that the series is not intended to make the South Park, or even to take sides:
“We do not deal too much the sensitive subjects, which make the news, it is too chaotic. We prefer to look at the wider trends. Ideally, I would like people on both sides of our divided nation to look at the Simpsons and see that Springfield, like America, is a city of good people … But who let themselves be easily fed. Whatever your definition of ‘Berner’ …”
And already, the team of the longest show in the history of American TV is planning what will be the event of this season 37: the 800th episode of the Simpsons!
“It will be broadcast in February. I can say it. Afterwards, they don’t want me to talk about the 800th … but I can say one thing: it will involve the family dog. This is a big teaser. And I tell you a little more: the dog becomes big!”
But what will happen to Petit Papa Noël?
For the record, in the 700th episode of Simpsons – broadcast in 2021 – we went back in time to attend the birth of Todd Flanders, given birth … by Homer. And we learned that Ned’s second son was so called Todd Homer Flanders.
