Trailer: Fatherland with Sandra Hüller marks the return of Paweł Pawlikowski

A road trip between Thomas Mann and his daughter through ravaged Europe in 1949.

After its appearance in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Fatherland is revealed.

Winner of the Director’s Prize on the Croisette, Paweł Pawlikowski remains faithful to his black and white aesthetic for this new historical drama, which once again explores the fractures of post-war Europe. The director of Ida And Cold War It tells the story of a father-daughter relationship inspired by real figures: Thomas Mann, Nobel Prize-winning writer played by Hanns Zischler, and his daughter Erika Mann, played by Sandra Hüller.

Together, they cross a Germany in ruins in the summer of 1949, at the heart of the emerging Cold War. The film is also known by this title: 1949.

Fatherland depicts a road trip between two worlds: from Frankfurt, under American influence, to Weimar, then under Soviet control. Aboard a black Buick, father and daughter confront the scars of history as much as the tensions of their own relationship. Mubi, which is distributing the film in numerous territories (US, UK, Europe and several international regions), is clearly banking on a potential awards season run.

With this new feature film, Paweł Pawlikowski confirms her taste for intimate stories anchored in major historical upheavals, while Sandra Hüller continues to impose her presence as one of the major actresses of current European cinema, three years later Anatomy of a Fall.

No French release date has yet been announced.
