Trailer for The Secret Agent, one of the best films of 2025
Kleber Mendonça Filho’s thriller, starring Wagner Moura, was doubly rewarded at the last Cannes Film Festival.
Wait a bit before completing your top of the year. The Secret Agent will be released in France next month, and the new feature film by Kleber Mendonça Filho (Aquarius, Bacurau) gave us a slap in the face last May at the Cannes Film Festival. The jury was not mistaken, awarding him the Best Director Prize and the Best Actor Prize for Wagner Moura (Narcos, Civil War).
The Secret Agent immerses us in Brazil in the 1970s, in the midst of a military dictatorship. The synopsis describes: Marcelo, a man in his forties fleeing a troubled past, arrives in the city of Recife where the carnival is in full swing. He comes to find his young son and hopes to build a new life there. That’s without taking into account the death threats that lurk and hover over his head…
This poetic and political thriller, magnificently interpreted, set to images and music (the trailer below gives you a nice overview), brings together two big names in Brazilian cinema who had never collaborated together but know each other very well. They actually met on the Croisette 20 years ago, as Wagner Moura (Narcos, Civil War) explained to us last May in Cannes:
“What really brought us together was not cinema, it was politics. Under Bolsonaro, we were very critical of the regime, and we paid the price (…) Our relationship is therefore largely based on the support we gave to each other. Basically, it looks a bit like that which binds the refugees of The Secret Agent, who come together to resist and help each other. The genesis of the film is to be found there: in a friendship nourished by a spirit of resistance.“
The Secret Agent will be released in cinemas in France on December 17, 2025. Trailer:
