Vincent Cassel has only one regret in his career
Questioned by Pierre Lescure in the show Beau Geste, Vincent Cassel admits to having been “bad”.
He is part of the restricted circle of French stars who have had an international career. He shot for Mathieu Kassovitz, Gaspar Noe, David Cronenberg, Darren Aronofsky, Maïwenn, Steven Soderbergh Or Matteo Garrone. Vincent Cassel has no reason to be ashamed of his career, as both a star of blockbusters and arthouse films, he has been able to build an eclectic and unique body of work.
Interviewed by Pierre Lescure in the show Nice gesture broadcast on France 2, the actor confided in his one and only regret, that of having refused a role in Wretched of Ladj Lyreleased in 2019: “Ladj Ly called me to play a role in it, and it was a bit of a complicated moment in the rest of my life. I was juggling and I said to him: ‘Listen, I won’t be able to, I can’t block myself,’” the star said.

Wretched was a true revelation, launching the career of Ladj Ly and winning four Césars, including Best Film, as well as the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Upon discovering the scale of the event, Vincent Cassel immediately recognized his mistake: “When I saw the trailer, I said: ‘Poor bastard’. I called him, I told him: ‘Ladj, I’ve never had regrets, but here, I was rubbish.’” The actor specifies that “it was a small role” but that does not lessen his regret at having declined.
The director planning to shoot a trilogy around the Miserable, perhaps the actor could finally find him for his final opus? For the moment, it is being written, and Ladj Ly is preparing to release number 2, Building 5, which this time is interested in poor housing in cities. Hiring Cassel for the last film would be a good way to close the loop with Hatethe film by Mathieu Kassovitz released in 1995 being an assumed reference to Les Misérables…
