War Machine 2: Will Alan Ritchson return for a sequel on Netflix?
Obviously, they have already planned to expand the universe…
Barely landed on Netflix, War Machine didn’t take long to bring out the heavy artillery.
The sci-fi action film by Alan Ritchson rose to the top of the platform’s most-watched programs, attracting millions of curious people from its first days of operation.
According to figures published by the platform, War Machine was the most viewed program on Netflix between March 2 and 8, with almost 40 million views in just three days. A sufficiently massive start to very quickly fuel discussions around a possible War Machine 2.
And clearly, the idea is not just a fantasy. Asked about the future of the franchise, Alan Ritchson suggested that the film universe had plenty of room to expand, ensuring that there is plenty of room to continue the story:
“A lot of material. Let me say it for everyone: there are a lot of things possible.”
The actor even went further by teasing a sort of title:
“War Machines is going to be crazy. We have a whole thing in mind. A whole plan…”
In other words: the team would have already thought about what comes next.
For the moment, nothing official from Netflix. But director Patrick Hughes admits that he already has a very precise idea of the possible sequel.
“I know exactly where the story would go if given the chance to continue.”
The filmmaker explains that he designed War Machine as a complete story, but also as an origin story for the character of 81. A way to start on a small scale and then expand the universe.
“The film starts on a very intimate scale and ends with something much larger. It was a really interesting trajectory…”
In other words: the door is open. So much so that Alan Ritchson, very attached to his character, even admits to loving the role to the point of having his number tattooed before filming: “I loved the spirit of the 81 character so much that I got ’81’ tattooed before everything had even really started!”
