Warner Bros. no longer wants Mad Max, George Miller seeks to end his saga elsewhere

After the commercial failure of Furiosa, the studio no longer wishes to finance the post-apo franchise. At 81 years old, George Miller still wants to find a new studio to make one last film… and maybe a series.

Nearly fifty years after launching Max Rockatansky on the desolate roads of Australia, George Miller would like to have the chance to say goodbye to his hero, in a final journey through the wastelands. But this time, without Warner Bros., historic partner of the franchise for more than forty years.

According to information from journalist Matthew Belloni (via The Playlist), the 81-year-old Australian filmmaker recently met with several Hollywood studios to offer them one last film Mad Max. Interested parties include Amazon, Universal and Sony Pictures, but not Warner Bros. who would have chosen not to continue the adventure.

It must be said that Miller’s idea for the sequel is very ambitious: to make a final feature film Mad Maxwhich would eventually be extended into a television series, before handing over the rights to the franchise to a new owner. A real page that would turn for one of the most emblematic post-apocalyptic sagas of cinema.

Except that Warner Bros. lost a lot of money with Furiosa in 2024. Despite excellent reviews, the prequel carried by Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth only grossed around $175 million worldwide, barely its production budget. A score very far from the cultural and commercial impact of Mad Max: Fury Roadwhich in 2015 became an instant action film classic and won six Academy Awards.

It now remains to be seen what this last chapter imagined by George Miller will be. For several years, fans have been hoping to see a success Mad Max: The Wastelanda project centered on Max himself, potentially with the return of Tom Hardy. But no official details have yet filtered out.

The idea of a television series is also mentioned. The universe of Mad Maxpopulated by warlords, citadels and survivors set on desert roads, seems large enough to accommodate new stories on the small screen.

In any case, for the moment, nothing has been signed, neither at Warner nor elsewhere.
