Did ET and Elliott ever see each other again? Steven Spielberg responds!
Forty-four years after the release of the science fiction masterpiece, the director has finally given his answer to one of the questions that fans have always been asking.
What happened after the heartbreaking goodbyes ofAND the extra-terrestrial ? Did Elliott ever see his friend from the stars again?
On the occasion of the promotion of his new film Disclosure DaySteven Spielberg has lifted the veil on this question that the 7th art has left unanswered.
Podcast guest Happy Sad Confusedthe director explained that the two characters never met again physically after the end of the 1982 film. But their bond never disappeared:
“Elliott never saw him again. But he continued to dream of him. There was always a psychic connection between them.“
The filmmaker also recalls that everything was already announced in the final scene. Just before getting back on board his ship, ET touches the young boy’s forehead and promises him: “I will always be here.” For Spielberg, this sentence was not symbolic but literal:
“When ET touches his forehead and says ‘I’ll always be here’, it was for the rest of Elliott’s life.“
In other words, even separated by light years, the two friends would have remained mentally connected until the end of their days.
Fans were still treated to a form of reunion in 2019. Without going through a real sequel, Henry Thomas, the interpreter of Elliott, reprized his role in an advertisement for Xfinity. Broadcast on the occasion of Thanksgiving in the United States, the spot showed ET returning to Earth 37 years later to find Elliott as an adult, now a father. An unofficial meeting, but like AND 2 will never exist…
