Wedding nightmare: second part, a successful sequel (review)

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett plunge Grace back into hell, where she and her little sister become the prey of a new hunt. An effective female survival game that plays with family ties.

Seven years passed between the first Wedding Nightmare and this sequel but Grace has not moved one iota. Sitting on the steps of the Le Domas’ sumptuous home in a bloody wedding dress, she thought she was done with bride hunting and murderous hide and seek. However, his rest will only be short-lived…

Barely has she escaped the clutches of her rich in-laws when the duo of directors immediately plunges her back into a game of another scale, leaving neither the viewer nor the protagonist any respite. On the menu: pacts with the devil, four new families to face until dawn (played by a surprising cast ranging from Sarah Michelle Gellar to David Cronenberg), a new mansion, new rules, but also a hitherto hidden little sister.

It is precisely thanks to this unexpected character that this sequel avoids a boring copy of the first opus. By handcuffing these sisters with weakened bonds together, a new emotional issue emerges. That of reconciliation, announced immediately by their Christian names, Grace and Faith. The two performers form a superb duo of badasses (and killers) on screen: Samara Weaving is more combative than ever and the bubbly Kathryn Newton, full of innocence, does not easily give up.

If the directors sometimes take the easy route by taking a familiar path paved with bloody explosions, insults and dysfunctional families – recurring markers of their filmography – this survival nonetheless remains effective and damn funny. A few scenes stand out and Wedding Nightmare: Part Two undermines, once again, any desire for hasty union
