What start in France for the new Star Wars film?
The Mandalorian & Grogu are having a launch roughly similar to that of Solo… but so far from Skywalker.
After several years of absence from the cinema, the saga Star Wars made its big return to French cinemas yesterday, with The Mandalorian & Grogu.
And unsurprisingly, the Lucasfilm film takes the lead in today’s new releases. The blockbuster carried by Pedro Pascal attracted around 83,000 spectators for its first day of operation here. A decent launch – especially since the film only benefited from a relatively limited combination for a Star Warswith around 550 rooms – but far from the franchise’s historic standards.
This start is light years away from that achieved by the last film: almost 400,000 admissions in 2019, after one day, for The Rise of Skywalkerninth episode of the main saga, which ended its French career with nearly six million admissions.
On the other hand, the start-up is closer to that of Solo: A Star Wars Storythe last standalone spin-off of the franchise released in cinemas, which attracted around 89,000 spectators on its first day in 2018.
Behind the galactic juggernaut, Autofictionthe new film by Pedro Almodóvar presented at Cannes, starts with around 17,000 preview admissions inclusive. A significantly lower launch than that of The Room Next Doorwhich had 29,326 admissions on its first day in 2024.
Further down the rankings, the Scandinavian horror film Passenger signed André Øvredal attracts around 8,000 spectators and climbs onto the podium.
Finally, Hitler’s Tasters peaked at around 7,000 entries, a score largely driven by the numerous previews.
