James Gunn takes over the screenwriter of Harley Quinn for his Batman

Christina Hodson, who wrote the scripts for Birds of Prey (in 2020) and also the solo film The Flash (2023), is currently in charge of writing The Brave and the Bold.

One more step towards James Gunn’s Batman for his DC Universe under construction.

As Robert Pattison prepares to start filming The Batman IIwith Matt Reeves, Gunn found the screenwriter of The Brave and the Boldhis future film dedicated to the Dark Knight.

According to very knowledgeable Hollywood journalist Jeff Sneider (The InSneider Newsletter), Christina Hodson is currently writing the first lines of the screenplay for The Brave and the Bold. A choice which is not trivial because the screenwriter knows the DC universe well: she is the one who signed the scripts for Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Story of Harley Quinn (in 2020) and more recently the solo film The Flash (2023).

Still according to Jeff Sneider, James Gunn deliberately chose not to publicly announce Hodson’s involvement in order to “protect” her from the considerable pressure that comes with writing a Batman film.

“I don’t know if his background at DC alone explains why Gunn wanted to keep this recruitment secret, but he suggested that he wanted to protect the then-unnamed writer of The Brave and the Bold from the media pressure of writing a Batman film.” writes Sneider.

The journalist also discusses the possibility that the DCU Batman film is currently going through important “creative changes“, and that Christina Hodson could at the same time work on another DCU project, which would explain Gunn’s silence. “But right now, and from what I know, it is Hodson that Gunn was referring to in his cryptic statements over the last few months“, says Sneider. “Again, she could be replaced tomorrow, but tonight there’s nothing to make me think it’s anyone else.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, announced The Brave and the Bold during the presentation of the first wave of DCU projects. The film will tell a father-son story centered around Bruce Wayne/Batman and his son Damian Wayne/Robin. It’s Andy Muschietti, director of The Flashwho could achieve. The film will introduce the DCU version of Batman, distinct from that played by Robert Pattinson in The Batman by Matt Reeves.

At this point, The Brave and the Bold does not yet have a release date.
