Why a Walking Dead animated series isn't possible right now
Robert Kirkman would also like to do it, but…
While it’s a hit on Prime Video with Invincible, Robert Kirkman would really like to adapt his other successful comic book, Walking Dead, in an ultra-violent cartoon. The creator responds to a fan in the “Letter Hacks” section of The Walking Dead Deluxe. #85 (via ComicBook), and reveals that he also dreams of a “faithful” animated adaptation:
“I would love to see this Walking Dead animated series happen one day. But I don't think it will be possible until I get the rights back, which are with AMC.”
We therefore understand that Robert Kirkman does not intend to develop an animated spin-off with AMC, but could do so on its own, when the American network no longer has the rights. Amanda LaFranco, editor-in-chief of The Walking Dead at the publisher Skybound, adds that “there have actually been developments over the years around the idea of an animated series Walking Dead and there are still a lot of fans who would love to see it happen.”. Even more so with the success Invincible, which shows what a Walking Dead animated made by Kirkman.
AMC has had the rights to the comic since 2009 and does not seem to want to let go of them yet. While the parent series ended a few years ago, the channel is multiplying spin-offs, notably The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and more recently The Ones Who Live.
