Will we see the cut scenes from Dune? Denis Villeneuve’s answer will not please you
“I’m very strict in the editing room. I don’t think about my ego, I think about the film.”
Part 2 of Dune arrives in exactly two weeks at the cinema, the imminent arrival of the giant worms generates the enthusiasm of lovers of desert landscapes invested by the charismatic Paul Altreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya). This stimulates the sale of special versions (4K UHD or others) of the first episode, generally consisting of deleted scenes. This is without counting on the contestation of Denis Villeneuve, who doesn’t hear it that way. During an interview for Collideron the occasion of the promotion of the second opus of the saga Dunethe director of Blade Runner 2049 addressed the issue of cut scenes, which would satisfy the purists of the universe. Unfortunately, the filmmaker has destroyed any hope of “full version” in future Blu-rays or special box sets:
“I firmly believe that as long as it’s not in the film, it’s dead. I destroy hopes and it’s painful for me“. The director went on to explain that it is difficult work, but necessary.
“Sometimes I pull out scenes and I’m like, ‘I can’t believe I’m cutting this‘. I feel like a samurai cutting open my insides. It’s painful, I can’t go back and create a Frankenstein creature and try to reanimate things I killed. It’s too painful. When he died, he died, and he died for a reason. It’s a painful project, but it’s my job. The film wins. I’m very strict in the editing room. I don’t think about my ego, I think about the film.“
“For me, the length of a film depends on what the story needs (…) For me, regardless of the physical duration of the race, it’s always the experience while watching, and how you feel , who wins. You can get bored with a five-minute film, and there are films, we know of some, that last three or four hours that know how to keep you in suspense. So you have to find the ideal running time, and that’s what I tried to do.“
The second part of Dune should last 10 minutes longer than the first part (i.e. 2h46) and will be released in theaters on February 28, 2024. Here is the trailer:
