Will Kingpin and Spider-Man one day face off in New York?

What if Kingpin finally faced Spider-Man? It’s the fantasy of many fans… and also that of Vincent D’Onofrio. But for this crossover to become reality, Marvel and Sony would still have to resolve their rights issues.

On paper, Kingpin is as much an enemy of Daredevil as he is of Spider-Man!

Created by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr., the character first appeared in 1967 in The Amazing Spider-Man comics. Suffice to say that seeing Vincent D’Onofrio cross paths with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU would be a logical fantasy. Moreover, it is even quite incoherent that, in this vast world of the MCU, the weaver does not intervene while his city, New York, is subjected to the reign of terror of the new Mayor Fisk.

Questioned on social networks, Vincent D’Onofrio did not mince his words. To a fan who mentioned a possible crossover, the actor responded bluntly:

“If Sony and Marvel stop the bullshit and come to an agreement one day…maybe. It’s a complicated rights issue. I hope it doesn’t happen.”

The problem is known and it is not so much narrative: Marvel Studios (owned by Disney) owns the characters linked to Daredevil, while Sony Pictures owns the rights to Spider-Man and his universe. As a result, cross-appearances are strictly regulated. This is why Hulk can appear in the Sony Brand film New Day, and why Spidey can appear in Disney’s Avengers: Endgame. But these crossovers are the result of a long negotiation and limited to a few films.

Today, Kingpin is limited to series, which prevents any confrontation with the Spider-Man on the big screen.

A legal headache all the more frustrating since season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again shows the vigilante hunt for Fisk in New York. In this universe, Peter Parker exists. He’s a masked city vigilante. He should be targeted by the Mayor… Conversely, the universe of Hell’s Kitchen can mix more easily with that of Spider-Man: Jon Bernthal will bring back his Punisher in Brand New Day this summer. And we often remember that Charlie Cox has already crossed the border once, appearing briefly in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but only as Matt Murdock, lawyer version.
