Mario creator doesn’t understand the bad reviews against Super Mario Galaxy
Shigeru Miyamoto considers the negative opinions appearing in the world press “strange”.
It’s a huge hit at the box office, with $800 million in revenue at the moment.
But Super Mario Galaxy strongly divides critics and public. And the creator of the plumber in the red cap, Shigeru Miyamoto, admits not understanding the severity of professional opinions, which he considers “strange”.
While the film delights fans, critical reception remains lukewarm, if not downright negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ score peaks at 43%, in line with the already turbulent results of the previous opus. Super Mario Bros. movie in 2023 (59%).
A discrepancy that intrigues Shigeru Miyamoto, historic figure of Nintendo. During an interview with the Japanese site Nintendo Dream, this emblematic figure of the video game industry says:
“It’s a bit the same as with the previous film, right? For the first part, I could understand some criticism. But this time, I honestly thought it would be different… and in fact, they are even harsher! I admit that I find it strange.”

A palpable annoyance, qualified by the enthusiasm of the public.
Because the fans responded. With a public score of 89% on the same site, it is obvious that Super Mario Galaxy is a film designed above all for fans of Nintendo’s brothers. What Miyamoto does not deny:
“Based on the reactions of those who have seen it, the film is very well received by Mario fans. And besides, the film was made by people who really love Mario, and it shows.”
The creator also underlines a key point: the sequel is visible to not everyone, even those who know nothing about it and who have not seen Super Mario Bros. in 2023:
“Even those who haven’t seen the first film, or who don’t know Mario, can enjoy it more as a real film, more than the previous part in my opinion.”
Super Mario Galaxy is currently in theaters and still number 1 at the French box office.
