30 years later, the film Casper will be adapted into a live series, produced by Spielberg
A more modern and possibly… darker version.
Thirty years after having left its mark on an entire generation, Casper is preparing to return… but not in the way you expect.
According to information from Deadline, a new live-action series is currently in development for Disney+. A project still under development, but already presented as a modern reinterpretation of the icon.
Behind this resurrection, we find Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, already working on the Goosebumps series recently broadcast on the platform. Both creators are writing the series, with Letterman directing. And above all, an unexpected name hovers over the project: Steven Spielberg, already involved in the cult 1995 film, returns as executive producer.
But be careful: there is no question of copying and pasting again. This new version is described as a “modern update” of the classic tale… with a darker twist. The tone could thus be closer to what Netflix did with Wednesday by dusting off The Addams Family.
Created in 1945 in a Famous Studios cartoon, Casper established himself as one of the most famous ghosts in pop culture, with a series of short films and then TV series in the following decades. Before becoming a global phenomenon with the 1995 film directed by Brad Silberling, around the young Christina Ricci, aka Wednesday…
For the moment, no casting, no date. But a dark version of Casper could well find a place on Disney+.
