Why Meryl Streep clashed with Goldie Hawn on Death Suits You So Well

“Everyone thought it was adorable, but I had a little problem with her…”

It’s a cult film from the 1990s, but the atmosphere was not always good on the set.

More than 30 years later Death suits you so wellstar Meryl Streep returns to her macabre tango with Goldie Hawn… and a little tension that marked the filming.

In an interview with Vanity Fairthe actress doesn’t beat around the bush: “Goldie was always late to set.” A seemingly innocuous detail, but which ended up seriously annoying him:

“I’m always on time, you see, and it’s annoying. She arrived late, in her red convertible… she drove herself to the shoot. That was surely the problem…”

And while everyone found it charming, Streep gritted her teeth:

She would show up with her hair messy, ‘Oh sorry!’, and everyone thought it was adorable… Yes, well. So, yes, I had a little problem with her.”

Nothing too bad though. The actress immediately tempers: “I adored her. I still adore her. She’s a friend.”

Looking back, the two actresses even laugh about it: “We’ve laughed about it a lot over the years, because people love this film. I felt like I was filming a documentary on Beverly Hills…

Released in 1992, Robert Zemeckis’ black comedy depicts the delusional rivalry between an actress and her former friend, both obsessed with eternal youth and ready to do anything to keep it, even if it means surviving their own deaths. But beyond this light tension with Hawn, Streep especially keeps a… complicated memory of the filming. At issue: the special effects, still in their infancy at the time and yet omnipresent in the farce mocking the race for beauty:

“I remember a green spandex jumpsuit that covered my whole body, with pins stuck in it… And that scene where my head is ripped off… I don’t even know how they did it. It’s not like we were in an Arthur Miller play! It’s a whole different kind of work. To say it’s tedious is an understatement. It was even exasperating!”

Fortunately, not everything had to be thrown away. Quite the contrary. “When we were filming the scenes together, Goldie and I were laughing so hard. We were having the time of our lives. She has the best laugh in America. She bursts out laughing, and we have to stop filming!”

Another good memory: Bruce Willis, although known to be difficult, was an excellent surprise.

“Bruce was divine. They say he could be complicated elsewhere, but with us, we had a blast. He was adorable, ready to be ridiculous. I found him wonderful.”

With its fantastic cast, Death suits you so well had raised $150 million at the time.
