Zac Efron to direct remake of Angel Heart for A24 and HBO
It will carry the television adaptation of the novel Falling Angel published in 1978, forty years after Alan Parker’s film with Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro.
After The Iron Claw in 2023, Zac Efron returns to A24 for a much darker project… and this time on the series side.
The actor will star and also executive produce a series adaptation of Angel Heart, developed for HBO in collaboration with A24.
The project is written and produced by Zach Baylin, creator of Black Rabbit, and is inspired by the novel Falling Angel published in 1978, already adapted for the cinema in 1987 under the title Angel Heart with Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro. The series will also incorporate elements from the sequel novel Angel’s Inferno.
The official pitch announces a dive into a dark and paranoid New York. We follow a New York paparazzi at the end of his rope, specialized in tracking down people who have disappeared or who do not want to be found. His life is turned upside down when a mysterious man hires him to find a missing woman. But the more he advances in his investigation, the more he discovers a disturbing truth: a powerful elite seems to be involved in the affair… even supernatural phenomena.
A starting point that mixes thriller noir, horror and conspiracy.
The series is produced by A24 and HBO, with Marc Toberoff also executive producing.
