Tom Holland wants to pass the baton to a new Spider-Man
The British actor would like to “do for someone” what Robert Downey Jr. did for him.
After nearly ten years in the Spider-Man costume, Tom Holland is looking toward the future of the franchise. The actor revealed in the columns of the magazine Empire that he would like to help transition to a new incarnation of Spider-Man…when the time is right.
“For whoever comes next, whether it’s a Miles Morales, a Spider-Gwen, a Spider-Woman or someone else, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter. What exactly that will look like, I have no idea. But if I could do for someone what Downey (Robert Downey Jr.) did for me, then I would leave very happy.“
A direct reference to Robert Downey Jr., whose Tony Stark had introduced Holland’s Peter Parker into the MCU as early as Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Spider-Man’s mentor then died in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, even if the actor will soon return to Marvel in the guise of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
But Marvel and Sony certainly don’t really want to change heroes. Since his debut in the role, Tom Holland has become one of Marvel Studios’ most trusted names. His first solo film, Spider-Man: Homecominghad already grossed $880 million worldwide in 2017. But the franchise changed dimension with Spider-Man: Far From Home ($1.1 billion) then especially Spider-Man: No Way Homea true global phenomenon having peaked at $1.9 billion in revenue.
Except that the British actor has already mentioned many times in the past his desire to stop weaving webs. He finally returned for a fourth film, but we understand between the lines who does not intend to linger for more years in the red suit.
In the meantime, the next opus, Spider-Man: Brand New Dayis expected in theaters on July 29, is already shaping up to be one of the biggest box office events of the summer.
