Lilly Wachowski calls for boycott of Harry Potter: “Otherwise, it’s supporting the genocide of trans people”

The Matrix director denounces JK Rowling’s controversial positions and calls for people not to watch the future HBO series.

Lilly Wachowski doesn’t mince her words.

In a long interview with Variety, the Matrix director openly calls for a boycott of the future Harry Potter series, due to JK Rowling’s positions on transgender people.

“She’s funding a transgender genocide. JK Rowling is funding a transgender genocide, period. So if you support Harry Potter, you’re supporting a transgender genocide.”

For someone who went through a gender transition almost two decades ago, the reasoning is simple: part of the money generated by Harry Potter products goes to Rowling and contributes, according to her, to the financing of campaigns and legislation hostile to transgender people.

She compares this situation to the boycott of certain companies for political or environmental reasons: “In the same way that if you are against Elon Musk, you boycott Tesla, or if you are against global warming, you try not to buy as much gasoline, you try to limit your use of these products. It’s mathematical. Your enjoyment of these series and your continued support of these series supports my eradication.”

The director goes even further when she mentions JK Rowling and Elon Musk, openly anti-trans: “These people are Nazis. Nazis in the literal sense of the term.”

Lilly Wachowski defends Elliot Page

In this same interview, Lilly Wachowski also talks about Elliot Page, who has just made an appearance in Nolan’s Odyssey. For her, the director deserves credit for offering this role to the transgender actor, but the rest of the industry must now follow:

“Christopher Nolan deserves credit for casting Elliot. That alone is the definition of an ally. And for Christopher Nolan to speak publicly about Elliot and the great experience he had working with him says a lot about the man he is.”

But Wachowski immediately asks the question: “Who’s next in the industry? There are people who have the power to give roles to trans actors, but what do they do? Are they so enmeshed in the system that they prefer to bury their heads in the sand? It seems like it.”

“My body is political”

The director herself is struggling today to bring her own projects to fruition.

And thinks that things are not going to get better, with the growing concentration of the Hollywood industry, and the planned merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount which will change the landscape of American media. She fears that these huge conglomerates will be increasingly subject to conservative political orientations:

“Meanwhile, our industry is consolidating into monoliths led by people like Larry Ellison, who is a radical conservative ideologue. Make no mistake: This ideology is going to permeate everything that bears the Paramount label, which will soon include Warner Bros., unless these lawsuits prevent the merger.”

Wachowski continues with a particularly graphic phrase: “It’s completely crazy! They’re the Death Stars. They want CNN because they want to make it Fox News.” She also explains that she wrote The Hunted, her next project with her partner, as a way of channeling her anger at the current political situation.

“It’s political, but being trans in the world we live in is political. My body is political.”
