Point Break will become a series produced by Canal+
More than thirty years after the cult film with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, Point Break will become a series. Canal+, via StudioCanal, will co-produce this new adaptation, production of which will begin in 2027.
Surfing, robberies, Ex-Presidents…
Does this bring back memories? More than thirty years after the cult film, Point Break will experience a new life in the form of a television series.
The project has officially received the green light and will be co-produced by StudioCanal, a subsidiary of Canal+, alongside Alcon Television Group and AMC Studios.
The first season will have eight episodes, with filming scheduled for early 2027. StudioCanal will also handle international sales and global distribution outside the United States and Canada. A significant involvement of the Canal+ group in this new version of a particularly popular franchise.
It will not be a remake, but a sequel. More or less.
The story will take place more than thirty years after the events of Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller. A new team of robbers, inspired by the famous Ex-Presidents, appears. To infiltrate him, the FBI will have to call on a mysterious former surfer with a troubled past.
The original Point Break, released in 1991, starred Keanu Reeves in the role of Johnny Utah, a young FBI agent infiltrating a group of surfers led by Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayze. Lori Petty and Gary Busey completed the cast. The film has since become a true cult classic.
Showrunners Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers will helm the series and also serve as executive producers. On the StudioCanal side, MK Kennedy, Paul Gilbert and Daniel Gratton will supervise the project.
“The opportunity to ride this legendary wave with AMC Studios and Alcon Television Group, while bringing this globally popular franchise to Canal+ subscribers and audiences around the world, was irresistible,” said MK Kennedy, Managing Director of StudioCanal Worldwide Television.
This obviously won’t be the first attempt to modernize Point Break. A remake released in 2015, starring Luke Bracey and Édgar Ramírez, enjoyed decent commercial success but was widely rejected by critics.
This new series must therefore succeed where this remake failed: rediscover the spirit of the 1991 film while inventing a new generation of Ex-Presidents. For the moment, no broadcast date has been announced in France.
