After Disclaimer, Alfonso Cuarón reunites Bill Nighy and Caitríona Balfe on Apple TV
The Mexican director is preparing a new horror series inspired by a novel by Adam Nevill.
Alfonso Cuarón will make his return to the cinema soon.
And in the process, he should produce a new series for Apple.
Two years after Disclaimer, the Mexican director is developing Ascension, in which Bill Nighy, cult actor of Love Actually, Shaun of the Dead, About Time and Good Morning England, will play opposite Caitríona Balfe, star of the Outlander saga.
Inspired by the novel Last Days by Adam Nevill, this series will mix horror and psychological thriller. It will follow Rose (Balfe), a determined and recently divorced documentarian, who excels at revealing other people’s secrets but struggles to solve her own. When she embarks on a project dedicated to a mysterious 20th century sect, the Church of the Ascension, she finds an unexpected refuge in its teachings. Until she discovers a much more sinister reality beneath this facade.
Alfonso Cuarón is co-writing the series with his brother Carlos Cuarón, as well as Natalie Erika James (Apartment 7A, Relic) and Christian White. All four will also be executive producers.
With Ascension, Cuarón returns to the small screen after Disclaimer, his thriller starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline.
The broadcast date for this new series has not yet been announced.
