Early reactions to Clayface applaud a pure body horror film

Will we see Clayface again in the DC Universe sequel?

Well launched at the American box office and supported by good reviews, Clayface has good reasons to smile. But will the success of the film be enough to prolong the character’s existence in James Gunn’s DC Universe?

Clayface has successfully entered the DC Universe.

THE body horror movie had a satisfactory first weekend at the US box office and early reviews are encouraging. What to envisage a future for the character in the next DC films?

At first glance, this seems obvious. If only because Clayface first introduced Gotham City into the DC Universe rebooted by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“We deliberately wanted to make it a bit of a troubled town.e”, describes director James Watkins in Variety detailing his vision of the famous megacity maintained by Bruce Wayne. “We were looking to draw an oppressive world, where buildings really dominate. We took inspiration from German expressionist cinema of the 1930s, with its towering buildings, strange angles and film noir shadows. We also looked at a lot of street photography of New York in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, before the city was renovated. The lighting is different, with a lot of neon. There’s a lot of dirt. and eccentricity in the streets…“

The idea was to make Gotham a real contrast with Coast City, its colors, its sun, its sky and its sea. In Gotham, on the contrary, the sky is rare and the atmosphere is much heavier.

Is this the same Gotham that we will find in The Brave and the Boldthe DC Universe Batman film currently in development under the supervision of James Gunn? Hard to say.

James Watkins himself admits that he didn’t try to integrate his film into the broader plans of DC Studios:

“Clayface, This is an independent story. Trying to add something that didn’t serve the story would have seemed artificial to me. There was no pressure to do so. I set out to tell a story I believed in, and I just tried to do it the best I could..”

Will Clayface return?

The director therefore has no plan for the continuation of the character. And he also doesn’t know if Clayface is destined to reappear in the DC Universe…

“This is a question to ask James Gunndismisses James Watkins out of hand, explaining that he appreciates the independent side of the film, without having to think about a sequel:

“I liked thinking about this film with an autonomous approach. I wanted to introduce a character, without having to already ask myself, ‘Now what’s next?’ I wanted his story to stand on its own..”
