The Diplomat: Netflix officially orders a season 5
Kate Wyler will return. Barely season 4 has been released online, Netflix is already renewing its political thriller led by Keri Russell for a fifth season.
Kate Wyler still has unfinished business.
Netflix has just formalized the renewal of The Diplomat for a season 5. A decision which comes as the fourth season, launched earlier this month, continues to attract subscribers: during its second week of broadcast, the series rose to third place in the platform’s global Top 10.
Keri Russell will obviously reprise her role as American ambassador, alongside Rufus Sewell, who plays her husband Hal Wyler. Allison Janney will also return as President Grace Penn, while Bradley Whitford plays her husband, Todd. Season 4 also introduced Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who) in the role of the new British Prime Minister.

Spoiler alert!
For the moment, Netflix has not revealed any details on the plot of this fifth season. But the finale of season 4 has plenty to fuel the rest. After the assassination attempt on Grace Penn, the president pushed the United States to the brink of war with Russia, despite Kate’s objections. The ambassador finally resigned publicly during the G7 summit to protest the president’s decisions. Hal followed her towards the exit.
The sequel will therefore have to explore the consequences of this political rupture, but also the tensions within the two couples at the heart of the series: Kate and Hal, on one side, Grace and Todd on the other. A playground as fertile as ever for this thriller which mixes diplomatic crisis, power struggles and private life.
Launched in 2023, The Diplomate has already garnered ten Emmy Award nominations, including two in the category of best drama series.
Season 5 does not yet have a release date.
