Adam McKay takes on the Jeffrey Epstein affair with Laura Dern
The producer of Succession is preparing a mini-series which will recount the investigation of journalist Julie K. Brown.
A hot new project is about to see the light of day in Hollywood. A series dedicated to the Jeffrey Epstein affair is in development, with Laura Dern starring and Adam McKay producing.
Carried by Sony Pictures Television, this mini-series will be inspired by the book Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story by journalist Julie K. Brown, the one who relaunched the investigation and brought Epstein’s crimes back to light. Laura Dern will play this Miami Herald reporter, at the heart of an investigation that is as explosive as it is decisive.
The project is presented as the story of a fierce investigation, revealing the underside of a secret legal agreement between Epstein and federal prosecutors. For years, Julie K. Brown identified more than 80 victims and convinced several survivors to testify, directly contributing to the arrests of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
Writing, we find Sharon Hoffman, who will co-sign the series and play the role of co-showrunner alongside Eileen Myers. Laura Dern will also executive produce, as will Adam McKay, through his company Hyperobject Industries, accompanied by Kevin Messick. Julie K. Brown herself is involved in the production.
If the project finds a broadcaster – which seems very likely – it will be the first fiction series dedicated to this sprawling affair. So far, the subject has mainly been covered through documentaries, looking back at the vast sex trafficking network orchestrated by Epstein for years, involving some of the most powerful figures in the world.
Adam McKay, who moved from comedy (Anchorman, Ricky Bobby: Roi du circuit) at the start of his career, has devoted himself for several years to more political and societal works, such as The Big Short, Don’t Look Up or the Succession series. His treatment of the Jeffrey Epstein affair will inevitably be an event.
