After Barbie, a Polly Pocket movie and a Hot Wheels movie in sight?
Mattel seems ready to dig into its toy box to bounce back on the success of Barbie.
Barbie is expected to approach or exceed $1 billion in revenue. So inevitably, Mattel wants to do more. Sequels, but also new films based on the brand’s licenses.
Polly Pocket should be next!
A movie with Lily Collins and directed and written by Lena Dunham has been in the works for some time. The star ofEmily in Paris should put themselves in the shoes of a Polly Pocket shortly. “First of all, they are two of my favorite girls in the world.”comments in Variety Robbie Brenner, head of studios Mattel, about Collins and Dunham. “It was an incredible collaboration. Lena is so invested. She rolls up her sleeves and really likes to immerse herself in the notes, in our feedback, she listens to what we say to her… She is incredible. Lily is very intelligent and very productive. It’s just an amazing collaboration, so we’re thrilled about it. Hopefully we can get this project done sometime in the future..”
No release date set for the film yet. Polly Pocket. No more for the movie Hot Wheels on which board… JJ Abrams !
During a recent investor presentation, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz revealed with Abrams: “For a long time we talked to Mattel about a movie Hot Wheels, and we couldn’t quite find the thing that made it work. Something worthy of Hot Wheels. Then we found something… Something emotional and grounded in reality and exciting“.
There is no script yet, but Robbie Brenner continues in Variety by ensuring that the project is moving forward: “We imagined something with real characters that we can all relate to, that are three-dimensional, that have emotional journeys. Anyway, his films have an incredible story and incredible characters. It’s something thing that was important to him – to make a film that will not only be fun and exciting, but has real emotion and real stakes.”
