Amazon assumes “taking its time” to choose the next James Bond
The studio procrastinates and promises: “This is the project of a lifetime for us…”
James Bond will return…Yes, but not right away.
Amazon, via Amazon MGM Studios, gave minimalist news of the next film in the saga during the last CinemaCon. The studio, which recently purchased creative control of the franchise, has entrusted Denis Villeneuve to direct. A widely praised choice, following the success of his films Dune. Same enthusiasm for the arrival of Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) to the scenario. But the real piece is yet to come: finding the next 007.
Faced with North American theater exhibitors, gathered at CinemaCon this weekend, the studio was careful not to reveal any names. And you will have to be patient.
“I know you’re all wondering when we’ll announce the next James Bond… Don’t get too excited. Just know that we take the time to do things with care and deep respect. This is the project of a lifetime for all of us, and a responsibility we don’t take lightly,” said Courtenay Valenti, head of cinema at Amazon MGM (via Variety).
Same speech on the side of artistic promise:
“When you combine one of the most beloved franchises in history with a world-class team – the brilliant Denis Villeneuve, producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, executive producer Tanya Lapointe, and screenwriter Steven Knight – you lay the foundation for something worthy of the Bond legacy. The film is coming. And when the time is right, more will be said.”
In the meantime, the rumors are running wild. Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner and even Louis Partridge move around insistently to put on the tuxedo. Whatever happens, the mission promises to be delicate because it will be necessary to succeed Daniel Craig, an incarnation who will have redefined the myth.
James Bond 26 does not yet have a release date.
