American TV Legend Bob Newhart Has Died
The sitcom actor, best known in France for Big Bang Theory, was 94 years old.
He was one of the most watched faces in the United States at the end of the 20th century: the actor Bob Newhart died at the age of 94.
Little known in France, he was nevertheless one of the most cult actors on the American small screen, thanks to sitcoms anchored in popular culture which bore his name: The Bob Newhart Show (during the 1970s) then Newhart (during the 1980s).
A former stand-up comedian with a unique, dry, deadpan style, he won a Grammy Award in the 1960s for an album of comedy songs.
In the 1990s, we see him in particular in EMERGENCIESwhere he played the role of a depressed patient for several episodes. But his real return to the small screen came mainly in the 2010s. For 4 seasons, he played Professor Proton of The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon’s childhood idol, a former TV icon, reappears in six episodes and also in the spin-off Young Sheldon afterwards.
So identified with the small screen, Bob Newhart never really got his chance on the big one. Of his film roles, he is most notable for being the voice of Bernard for Disney in the films Bernard and Bianca.
Bob Newhart leaves four children. His wife, Virginia, to whom he was married for 60 years, died in 2023.
