Upload: the end of the series explained by Robbie Amell

How does it end? “It’s the most beautiful thing I have ever read.”

It is one of the best series of premium video that has just ended.

Upload, a very beautiful science fiction fable, is ending this week with the posting of the last 4 episodes online that complete the last season 4. So how does it end? And why?

Attention spoilers!

The Upload series had started with the death of Nathan (Robbie Amell). No wonder, ultimately, that it ends in the same way.

At the end of a poignant conclusion, Nora (Andy Allo) said goodbye to the man she loves, Ingrid (Allegra Edwards) obtains her “happy ending” with her favorite double, and Luke (Kevin Bigley) heroically sacrificed himself.

In the character of the character since 2020, Robbie Amell embodied all the versions of Nathan. And for him, the end imagined by the creator Greg Daniels is “incredibly satisfactory”, even if she will not necessarily appeal to everyone: “It’s beautiful, it sounds true. It seems right.” Because yes, in this final, Nathan dies for good. His body lets go. And he refuses a new attempt at upload or download. He exchanges his wishes with Nora at a virtual marriage … then dies naturally. Amell justifies:

“The series begins with a somewhat selfish and superficial Nathan. Then, over time, he discovers with the public that he is not necessarily the type although he thought he was. He is someone who, in season 1, would have done everything to save himself. In season 4, what matters to him is the happiness of the woman he loves”.

After Nathan’s death, Nora-always with her finger ring-refuses an appointment. A notification then reveals that its stored memories remain available for a possible download. Greg Daniels had considered “all possible ends” before choosing the one that seemed most faithful to history.

Andy Allo, the interpreter of Nora, would have liked a happier conclusion, but still finds the magnificent final arc:

“I didn’t want to see Nathan being re—subigned and relive all of this. And finally, I accept that he dies for real.”

In another interview for Entertainment Weekly, Robbie Amell admits to having hoped for it, at one point. But when reading the final script, he sent a message to Greg Daniels: “It is the most beautiful thing I have ever read.” Sad but logical, according to him: “I think that when Ingrid has uploaded Nathan, it was like a short life for him. We see how much this character changed. At the start, he was centered on himself. It was a guy who would have done anything to save himself in the first season. And now, everything he wants is that the person he loves is happy.”
