Barbra Streisand will not come to Cannes for her Palme d’Honneur
The Festival, however, maintains the tribute which will take place during the closing ceremony.
After Peter Jackson and John Travolta, a third Palme d’Honneur will be awarded as part of the 79th Cannes Film Festival to Barbra Streisand. We unfortunately learn that the famous singer and actress will not be able to be present on the Croisette for this celebration of her career, notably marked by her Oscar for best actress for funny girlin 1968.
In the press release, Barbra Streisand puts forward small concerns to justify her absence:
“On the advice of my doctors, as I continue my recovery from a knee injury, I unfortunately cannot join the Cannes Film Festival this year. I am deeply honored to receive the Honorary Palme d’Or and looked forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition. I was also looking forward to spending time with artists I admire so much and, of course, returning to France, a country I have always loved. While I regret not being able to be there in person, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all the filmmakers around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being showcased this year. My most sincere thanks go to the Festival, as well as to all those who continue to support and defend the art of cinema.“
The Cannes Festival, however, announces that it will maintain the tribute which will take place on Saturday May 23 during the closing ceremony to be followed live on France Télévisions at 8:15 p.m.
