Javier Bardem makes rare confidences about his life with Penélope Cruz
“She’s incredibly beautiful. When I see her on the cover of magazines, I think: Is that my wife? Seriously?” The beautiful tribute from the Spanish star to his wife.
He will be at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, to bring Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s new film into competition.
Before the madness took over the Croisette, Javier Bardem spoke at length to Variety. An interview in which he looks back on his relationship with Penélope Cruz, as rarely, talking about their family life, and the way in which work fits (or not) into their daily life.
Their shared story on screen is already almost a film in itself. In 1992, they met in Jamón Jamón by Bigas Luna, then met again in 2008 in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. In the meantime, they also share In the flesh by Pedro Almodóvar. But in real life, none of this spills over into their daily lives. Bardem insists on a simple rule: at home, the cinema remains at the door.
“At home, we don’t talk much about work. We have no photos, no posters, nothing that reminds us of our job. We love what we do, but we try to separate life and fiction.”
Even their respective Oscars – Penélope’s for Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Javier for No Country for Old Men – are stored out of sight.
This desire for compartmentalization makes their recent joint project all the more special, Bunkerwritten and directed by Florian Zeller. For Bardem, the film acts almost as a mirror on their own life as a couple: “It’s a very beautiful marriage story. And sometimes, we get so caught up in the children, the house, the daily life… that we forget to really look at ourselves..” Working together therefore had an almost intimate dimension; “There, we were forced to sit, look at each other, listen to each other for hours. And that, in itself, is already something precious.”
And about their relationship, Javier Bardem is particularly effusive, while the couple is renowned for their discretion:
“Penélope is a woman with whom I had the immense fortune to share life, at the same time, in the same place. She is incredible. Really. Beautiful, but above all deeply good. He’s a good person. The way she is with her family, her friends, our children, with me, with herself… after all these years, I have never seen a single trace of malice in her. And what’s more, she’s incredibly beautiful. Really. When I see her on the cover of magazines, I say to myself: is that my wife? Seriously ? It’s impossible!“
Beyond this peaceful family life, Javier Bardem remains extremely active professionally, filming around the world. But it imposes a strict, non-negotiable rule on producers:
“I have no comfort requirements in my contracts,” he explains. “The only important thing for me is not to be away from my family for more than two weeks.”
Since the birth of their children, family organization has become central: one of the parents always stays at home. On the set of Bunkerfilmed in Madrid, they were both present on a daily basis: “For once you feel like you have a normal job,” he says. “You get up, you go to work, and you come home in the evening.”
Attentive father, Javier Bardem also talks about his desire to raise their children far from digital overexposure. Their 15-year-old son received his first phone recently, without access to social networks: “Of course, no social media. They already work on computers at school, which we accept… and which we don’t completely accept either.”
With Penélope Cruz, they above all try to convey another idea of time. “We try to teach them to be alone with themselves. To be bored. Looking at the ceiling. To do nothing. The current generation has less patience, less attention, less attention to detail. We all live at too fast a pace. And it takes a lot of courage to stop, to just enjoy something without thinking about what you might be missing out on. This is where creativity is born…”
Javier Bardem will star in The Beloved Beingthe new film from Rodrigo Sorogoyen, which will be released on May 16 in Cannes and in cinemas in France. Then we will see it in Cape Fearthe Apple TV series adapted from Nerves on edge.
