Chris Pratt drops Avatar 3 at the US box office, flop for Return to Silent Hill
Found Guilty, the legal thriller that plays with our fear of AI, takes the top spot and ends Pandora’s dominance.
The science fiction thriller Found guiltyworn by Chris Pratt (which will be released next Wednesday in France) signed a start at 11.2 million dollars for its release in North America this weekend. A score sufficient to end the reign of Avatar: Of Fire and AshesJames Cameron’s juggernaut, which dominated the US box office for five weeks!
Without being a massive launch, it is a good score for Found guiltya science fiction thriller that puts AI into American justice. It should be noted that extreme weather conditions (blizzards and snowstorms) are currently affecting a large part of the United States, which does not encourage people to go to the cinemas. Many theaters are closed and the American box office is affected with around 60 million dollars for all films combined… That’s not much. But Found guilty almost reaches the score estimated by the industry (projections were at 12 million). Still, its production budget of $60 million – excluding international marketing costs – may be difficult to amortize.
Avatar 3 slips to second place with an additional $7 million this weekend. After six weeks of release, the film has grossed $378 million in North America and $1.38 billion worldwide. A colossal score, but still far from the heights reached by Avatar (2009) and Avatar 2 (2022), which each dominated the US box office for seven consecutive weekends and peaked at $2.9 and $2.3 billion.
On the third step of the podium, we find again (!) Zootopia 2. The Disney animated film grossed $5.7 million in its ninth weekend, bringing its total to $401 million in the United States and $1.744 billion worldwide.
On the other hand, it’s a cold shower for Return to Silent Hill. The adaptation by Christophe Gans only took seventh place for its first weekend, with $3 million collected in 1,850 theaters. A start far below those of the first two films in the horrific saga: silent Hill (2006) opened to 20 million, while Silent Hill: Revelation (2012) reached 8 million. The first opus, distributed by Sony, ended its career at 100 million dollars worldwide, when the sequel, supported by the late Open Road, stopped at 55 million. At present, it is difficult to see how Return to Silent Hill could do the same. Released in cinemas in France on February 4, 2026.
Finally, the announcement of the Oscar nominations on Thursday offered a boost to several contenders.
Particularly at A24, where Marty Supremewith nine nominations, takes in an additional $3.5 million in 2,021 theaters. A drop limited to 32% compared to the previous weekend – the lowest in the top 5. The film, starring Timothée Chalamet and directed by Josh Safdie, has now totaled $86 million in North America and more than 105 million worldwide.
