The Funny Ladies returns to the cinema! A new film is being prepared
A new version, which would not bring back Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu.
“Hello, Charlie” !
Here is the trio of vigilante mercenaries again. Sony Pictures is currently developing a new version of Charlie’s Angelsfor the cinema.
The cult detective series launched in 1976 followed three women working for the Townsend Detective Agency. It quickly established itself as a pop phenomenon, starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith, propelled to the status of TV icons. At the turn of the 2000s, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu took up the torch in the cinema version directed by McG, whose first film grossed $264 million worldwide and gave birth to a less successful sequel.
Screenwriter Pete Chiarelli has been hired to write the script for the project, still at an early stage, specifies the American press. He is best known for his screenplays. Crazy Rich AsiansAnd The Proposal and the recent animated film Goatreleased in theaters on Wednesday, already for Sony.
More reboot attempts have failed in recent years. A new TV series was dared in 2011 – with Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor – and canceled after only eight episodes broadcast… In 2019, a new cinema version directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska also failed, collecting only $73 million at the global box office…
So why restart the Funny Ladies Today ?
Because the saga will celebrate its 50th anniversary in a few months. The easy opportunity for Sony to reevaluate its big screen potential. The license still retains quite a bit of esteem and there is plenty to do to imagine a story with Charlie’s angels…
