Craig Mazin (The Last of Us) retouched Dune 2 for Denis Villeneuve
The director called him in to help rework part of the screenplay co-written with Jon Spaihts.
Craig Mazin took part in one of the most anticipated films of the year. The screenwriter widely praised for the mini-series Chernobyl was called in for reinforcement Dunes: Part 2to retouch the screenplay co-written with Jon Spaihts (Dune 1, Passengers, Prometheus):
“I left the film industry. But I will collaborate with a few directors if I find them brilliant, so if they call like Denis Villeneuve did, then that’s okay. I am there for 3 or 4 weeks, to rework what has already been worked on”explained the screenwriter in the Podcast Happy Sad Confused.
Originally came from comedy with in particular Very Bad Trip 2 And A la carte scamCraig Mazin threw himself headlong into the drama with Chernobyl. Very good decision since the mini-series earned him an excellent critical reception, an Emmy Award and two Golden Globes. In 2023, he also wrote and directed the horror series The Last of Us on HBO. On Dunes: Part 2on the other hand, he only did “only a small part of the work”, he nuances.
Prior to 2022, the screenwriter would not have been mentioned in the film’s credits for this work. But a policy shift at Writers Guild of America has changed that. From now on, screenwriters who participate in the writing of a feature film are credited as “Additional Literary Material” (ALM).
The output of Dunes: Part 2 is scheduled for November 1, 2023. The latest trailer released last May revealed new faces to the cast: Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux And Austin Butler. They will therefore be alongside Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Christopher Walken And Rebecca Ferguson featured in this second installment.
