Crazy Rich Asians becomes an HBO series with Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh
Eight years after the success of the film, HBO ordered a series that will continue the story of the Young family. Adele Lim, co-writer of the feature film, will be at the helm, with the return of Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh to the cast.
We’ve been waiting for the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians for eight years.
And it will ultimately take the form of an HBO series.
Adapted from the bestselling novels by Kevin Kwan, this new fiction will pick up after the events of Jon M. Chu’s film, released in 2018. At the time, this romantic comedy created a surprise at the box office, becoming the biggest success of its kind for a Hollywood production for almost a decade in North America, raking in $239 million at the global box office.
Good news for fans: a good part of the original cast will be back. Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will star in the series, while Michelle Yeoh will appear in a recurring role. Enough to find the characters who made the success of the film, even if the details of the plot and the broadcast date still remain unknown.
Behind the camera, Adele Lim, co-writer of the feature film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She will reunite with Kevin Kwan, the author of the novels, but also Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Jon M. Chu, who remains associated with the project as executive producer.
The director has not hidden his enthusiasm at the idea of returning to this universe. “Eight years ago, Crazy Rich Asians changed my life, and I had the chance to make it with the most creative and funniest group of people I know,” he explains. Since then, he continues, actors have become movie stars, superheroes, entertainers capable of filling entire theaters, and even an Oscar winner. “Bringing them together again feels like coming home.”
Jon M. Chu also underlines the special place that the film has taken with the public, from mahjong evenings to plane trips where it has become a must-see. Before concluding with a formula that should speak to fans: “Finally, I can answer the question that I have been asked almost every day for eight years: ‘When will the sequel arrive?’ Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back.”
Casey Bloys, head of HBO and now co-president and chief content officer of Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, is also delighted to see the team pick up the thread of this story: “We are delighted that Adele and the team behind this historic film are bringing the next chapter of this story to life.”
The Crazy Rich Asians sequel does not yet have a release date.
