Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling paid tribute to the stuntmen, who claim their Oscar

The two actors play together in The Fall Guy, a film by David Leitch dedicated to the profession.

After having awakened the quarrel of “Barbenheimer” in a well-crafted exchange, Emily Blunt And Ryan Gosling introduced a sequence of tribute to the stunt profession, a first for the Academy of Oscars, which, unlike the Emmys or the SAG Awards, still does not provide awards for this profession.

However, it is not for lack of asking: for years, unions have been demanding this recognition, relayed by the actors themselves. We remember the release of Brad Pitt in 2020, when he had just been crowned Best Supporting Actor for his understudy character in Once Upon a Time…. in Hollywood : “I think it's high time we gave our stunt coordinators, and our stunt teams, some love.”.

We had a glimmer of hope at the announcement of the creation of a new prize by the Academy, the first since 2001. But no, this prize, scheduled for 2025, will reward Best Casting. So when Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling announced that they were on stage at the Dolby Theater for “celebrating the stunt community” and his “unsung heroes”we are still happy that the Academy is giving them this visibility via a tape showcasing some of the most spectacular stunts in the history of cinema.

Ryan Gosling set the Oscars stage on fire with “I’m Just Ken”

In the voiceover accompanying the montage, Ryan Gosling clarifies the historical importance of stunt performers, recalling that early directors like Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton were their own understudies themselves. He pursues :

“The history of the Academy is closely linked to the intrepid efforts of the incredible artisans of the stunt community. Each awards season highlights their work across genres, from Butch Cassidy and the Kid has Black Panther, from the depths of space to the battlefields, on earth and beyond. With the actions they choreograph, stunt doubles still create some of the most memorable moments in cinema history today, something they have been doing since its inception.”

Who are the big losers at the 2024 Oscars?

And it's an experience both actors became familiar with while working with David Leitchwho began his career as a stunt double for films like Fight Club, Ocean's Eleven or Matrix Reloaded. Having been behind the camera for ten years, Leitch chose Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling as the headliners of his film The Fall Guyremake of The Man Who Fallen centered on a stuntman character. In December, he confided First having wanted to make a film about “shadowy men fascinating enough for the public to identify with and project themselves into them”.

The day before yesterday, the stuntmen shared a bit of Hollywood's light, a (small) victory for this profession. While waiting for a little more recognition, The Fall Guy will be released in theaters on May 1st.
