Enzo: a work story and desire (critic)

Imagined by Laurent Cantet and produced by his always accomplice Robin Campillo after his death, an initiatory story on edge that reveals a talent to follow: Eloy Pohu

They met at IDHEC in the early 1980s. And for 40 years, their complicity – friendly as professional – did not know any clouds. Robin Campillo, the director of 120 beats per minute (Cannes Grand Prix in 2017) Co-written or mounted (and sometimes both) all the films of Laurent Cantet, including his 2008 Golden Palme, Between the walls. So when Cantet learned to have incurable cancer and wanted to embark on a final project, Enzohe spontaneously asked his friend to accompany him. Including on the set on the days when it would not be in condition. Campillo obviously accepted. But after having found some of the main performers (including the revelation Eloy Pohu in the title role), Laurent Cantet died on April 25, 2024. Before the first Clap. And Robin Campillo therefore staged this posthumous film alone, which opened the fifteen of the filmmakers 2025. An emancipation film centered on a 16 -year -old teenager (Eloy Pohu, an exceptional revelation), apprentice mason at La Ciotat, his relationships with his family, his boss and his colleagues, and more particularly one of them of Ukrainian origin for whom he experiences a new disorder. A film of a delicacy and infinite power, wonderfully mixing the universes of the two filmmakers both in the way of filming bodies and talking about the world of work or to inscribe the story in the agitated times that we are going through (the war in Ukraine …). Until the last sublime and poignant scene. To life, to death!

By Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo. With Eloy Pohu, Pierfrancesco Favino, Elodie Bouchez … Duration: 1h42. Released June 18, 2025
