Good advice from the director of GoldenEye to Denis Villeneuve before James Bond 26

“Don’t break what isn’t broken. There’s no need to reboot!”

Martin Campbell, director of GoldenEye (1995) and Casino Royale (2006), gave some advice to Denis Villeneuve, recently chosen to direct the next James Bond for Amazon MGM Studios.

Interviewed by Gold Derby on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of GoldenEyeCampbell was clear:

Don’t break what isn’t broken. There’s no need for a reboot — you just need to make a damn good Bond movie! If we released GoldenEye or Casino Royale next week, they would still have the same impact. So don’t touch that, basically. There’s a lot of fertile ground for Bond, especially in today’s world. I just hope they don’t break what already works!”

Because there is talk of a total reboot. It is even said that James Bond 26 will be a prequel, on the origins of 007, before his entry into MI6…

Regarding the ideal actor to play 007, Campbell believes that there is no established profile:

“There’s no obvious star like Pierce Brosnan at the time. Pierce was a perfect Bond for his time. But Daniel wasn’t Daniel Craig when he got the role, and all the credit goes to Barbara Broccoli for pushing him. So what’s needed is another Daniel Craig, someone who isn’t necessarily a star… Frankly, a star isn’t necessary. James Bond is the star, and the movie is the star. You just need to find an actor exceptional who fits the role.”

Well-informed advice.

As of now, the release date and cast of James Bond 26 have not yet been announced, with Villeneuve finishing first Dune: Part 3 before devoting himself to 007.
