Infernal Affairs: the film that inspired Martin Scorsese’s The Departed returns to TV and in replay

20 years after the release ofInfernal Affairs, the Hong Kong trilogy by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak has been given a facelift. A 4K restoration was released in theaters in spring 2022, and this beautiful reissue is now visible on television. Arte schedules the first part at 10:45 p.m., just after Cop Story, another cult thriller, French this time, carried by Alain Delon and Jean-Louis Trintignant. The three films are also visible for free in replay on the channel’s website until May.

Infernal Affairs, it is the story of a long-term infiltration with on one side a member of the triads (Andy Lau) who climbs the ranks within the police, and on the other a cop (Tony Leung) who rises also in the mafia hierarchy, until becoming the boss’s right-hand man. “A scenario of a simplicity that borders on genius“, wrote First at the time.
The first opus was loosely adapted into English by screenwriter William Monaghan and filmmaker Martin Scorsese in 2006, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg in the lead roles. Infiltrators won the Academy Award for Best Picture the year following its theatrical release.
