Ironheart: The new Marvel A of the heart (Critique) series

Despite his blatant lack of great spectacle, this sincere attempt is not lacking in emotion, good ideas and exciting revelations for the rest of the MCU.

From the fiasco Secret invasionwe no longer expect much of the Marvel of Disney+series.

Too rarely up to expectations, they have often failed to recreate the thrill of films. So how could this small series of platforms compete with the emblematic gondola head of Marvel Universe? How the young Riri Williams Could she become the news Tony Stark ? How to impose Ironheart in credible successor ofIron Man ?

Bypassing the problem, Marvel decided not to try to do Iron Man with Ironheart. And there was certainly the good idea: the series was told up to Riri Williams!

Riri, she is an extremely brilliant young woman, recently excluded from the MIT for having too often exploded the equipment of the university. Back in Chicago, her hometown, she is determined to go to the end of her project: Building a bionic armor “iconic“, As she says. But to get there, she needs means … She then agrees to work for The Hood, a thug as disturbing as fascinating, endowed with powers thanks to a magic cape.

The series advances at its own pace, true to its heroine, between genius DIY and first chills of responsibility.

Six 45 -minute episodes, it is undoubtedly the ideal format for this kind of production, which goes straight to the basics. And the essential, here, is Riri And his life as a genius not at all billionaire. How to make an armor of the future when you cannot afford a Stark? Ironheart held his intrigue in a sincere attempt. The character, briefly crossed in Wakanda Forever,, Returns in an intimate, almost modest story, which clearly refuses the direct comparison with Tony Stark (even if it is constantly mentioned).

Instead, the series relies on a well -brought concept: the opposition between technology and magic. Faced with Riri’s hi-tech combination, there is the old-school cape of The Hooda supernatural artefact from another dimension.

This contrast is maliciously exploited, but the execution remains surprisingly stingy in action. For a marvel stamped production supposed to extend the inheritance ofIron Manwe expected a little more spectacle. Here, the costume is almost secondary: the armor is mainly used as a pretext to follow the personal evolution of Riri Williams.

Dominique Thorne does what it can with the energy of youth, but it struggles to impose a real charisma. Is not Robert Downey Jr. Who wants. Fortunately, the supporting roles ensure: the dark Anthony RamosA Alden Ehrenreich (the ex-Solo of Star Wars) very fun in an improbable role and especially the delightful entry of the scene of Sacha Baron Cohen in the MCU. The ex-Borat Slps the lion’s share in a last successful episode, which adds new mystical elements to the Marvel universe.

We do not know if we will see the English star in the saga or even if the franchise will one day rement his biblical character (we are still waiting for the return of Arishem and the celestials, four years after the release of Eternal in the cinema). Perhaps it’s just a nod to the fans of comics … But at least the wink is cool. Note anyway Dominique Thorne does not even appear in the announced cast ofAvengers: Doomsday. A bad sign?

Ironheart, in 6 episodes, to see on Disney Plus on Wednesdays June 25 and July 2.
