Jim Jarmusch, Richard Linklater, Spike Lee and Wes Anderson should be in Cannes 2025
On the other hand, Yorgos Lanthimos, Paul Thomas Anderson, Luc Besson and Cédric Jimenez are likely to miss the selection this year.
For the moment, these are only indiscretions. Nothing official yet to date. But one month before the press conference which will reveal the official selection of 2025 Cannes Film Festivalsome names are starting to leak.
And according to Variety, three films seem to have already received their entry ticket for the competition. One of them is the highly anticipated Father Mother Sister Brother of Jim Jarmuschwith Cate Blanchett,, Adam Driver And Tom Waits.
American filmmakers should have a place of choice in this 78th edition, since we should also find in the lists of the happy elected officials Richard Linklaterwith his film New waveturned in French and which traces the creation of the film Out of breath by Jean-Luc Godard and the birth of the new wave in the 1960s. Suffice to say a film made for the Croisette.
Third US director expected this year, Spike Lee should return to Cannes in selection with his film Highest 2 Lowest Produced by A24, a rehabilitation of the criminal thriller High and low (1963) by Akira Kurosawa, with Denzel Washington in the main role. The last time the New Yorker was in the south of France was to preside over the 2021 edition jury.
Finally, Wes Andersonaccustomed to the Croisette, is also murmured insistently. His film The Phoenician Scheme – which tells the story of a family business, with Benicio Del Toro,, Mia Threapleton,, Michael Cera,, Tom Hanks And Scarlett Johansson – is one of the most likely candidates.
On the other hand, Variety draws up a list of the feature films that should not appear in the Official selection 2025 ::
Bugonia of Yorgos Lanthimos should not be there, any more than the new film of Paul Thomas Anderson (still without title) with DiCaprio, or even the Dracula of Luc BessonOr Matters of Celine Song,, De Gaulle d ‘Antonin Baudry,, Sacrifice of Romain Gavras,, Dog 51 of Cédric Jimenez,, In The Hand of Dante of Julian Schnabel (with Oscar Isaac And Jason Momoa),, The Smashing Machine of Benny Safdie (with Dwayne Johnson And Emily Blunt) or The AVENGING SILENCE of Nicolas Winding Refn (not yet turned).
THE 2025 Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 13 to 24, 2025.
